The Potential Impact of Global Covid-19 Crisis on SDGs Achievement in ASEAN Countries
Abstract:
The Global Covid-19 Crisis (GCC) has created the worst global economic recession since the great depression. It is natural to expect that many of the development targets outlined in Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to be achieved in 2030 will be affected. In this paper, following World Bank (2015), we projected the baseline (without GCC) trajectory of selected SDGs indicator of ASEAN-5 countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, and Vietnam). Using IMF (2020) forecast of economic growth in 2020 and 2021 as well as several scenarios of recovery, we compare those baseline trajectories with the systemic impacts brought by GCC on most vulnerable SDGs In particular, we asked to what extent the GCC may potentially slow down the achievement of selected SDGs at regional level. Policy implications, getting from the crisis to proactive regionally coordinated actions are discussed, and recommendations are made.
