UNPAD’s SDGs Center director appointed as Under-Secretary-General of the UN/Executive Secretary of UN-ESCAP

United Nations appointed Prof. Armida Alisjahbana, Director of Center for Sustainable Development Goals Studies (SDGs Center), Universitas Padjadjaran, as Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and the 11th executive secretary of the Economics and Social Comission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP). According the UN announcement (13/09/2018), in Bangkok, Prof. Alisjahbana will also serve as the Coordinator of the five United nations Regional Comissions.

As Under-Secretary-General (USG), Prof. Armida Alisjahbana join the rank of senior official within the United Nations System, appointed by the General Assembly on the recommendation of the Secretary-General. The United Nations regards the rank as equal to that of a cabinet minister of a member state, and under-secretaries-general have diplomatic immunity under the UN Charter.

Prof. Armida Alisjahbana, together with other colleagues from Universitas Padjadjaran has been instrumental in the establishment of SDGs Center at UNPAD, the first of its kind in the world. The center, established in 2016, right after the declaration of the SDGs Agenda, has been contributing significantly to the mainstreaming, preparation and evaluation of national policy agenda and programs to achieve SDGs. The Center is well-known, among others, for the baseline analysis of national and regional readiness for SDGs. Under Prof. Armida Alisjahbana, the center has also inspired the establishment of other similar centers in various universities in Indonesia.

With her new appointment, Prof. Alisjahbana will carry on the mission of the achievement of SDGS at international arena. She will lead UNESCAP to promote inclusive and sustainable economic and social development in the Asia-Pacific region, with priority accorded to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the achievement of the SDGs. UN ESCAP emphasizes strengthening institutional capacities to serve the rights of the people of the regions and address their aspirations and needs. ESCAP collaborates with other UN entities and intergovernmental organizations in various areas of development.
