UNDP Partners with the first SDGs Center in Indonesia


JAKARTA, 19 October 2017 – United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) joint forces with one of Indonesia’s leading university, Universitas Padjadjaran (UNPAD) in accelerating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) attainment in Indonesia. The partnership was formalized through signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), on 19 October 2017, at UNDP Indonesia office, Jakarta. The MoU was signed by Prof. Tri Hanggono Achmad, Rector of UNPAD, and Anita Nirody, UN Resident Coordinator UNDP and Resident Representative Republic of Indonesia.

The purpose of this MoU is to provide a framework of cooperation and to facilitate and strengthen collaboration between two parties in areas of common interest. In addition, the partnership will encompass several areas of activity such as: conducting a baseline analysis on the SDGs indicators in the roll-out of the SDGs Localization initiative in Indonesian provinces and/or districts; disseminating and advocating the SDGs Center’s studies on SDGs in Indonesia; joint SDGs event annually; communicating any joint activity and/or research through innovative channels e.g. social media, to make an impact to the society; and collaborating in any activity and/or research related to the attainment of the SDGs in Indonesia. Lampung Province will be the first manifestation of this partnership in conducting a SDGs baseline study.

In his remark, Prof. Dr. med. Tri Hanggono Achmad, Rector of Universitas Padjadjaran said that universities’ role in SDGs implementation is instrumental. They are the creators of SDGs implementors; provider of SDGs-relevant knowledge and innovation; and independent and authoritative faciliator of knowledge sharing and public discourse on SDGs.

UNPAD is leading the academe in achieving the SDGs by establishing the first-of-its-kind, Center for Sustainable Development Goals Studies (SDGs Center) back in May 2016. Rector of UNPAD, Prof. Dr. med. Tri Hanggono Achmad, dr. said “The SDGs Center is a venue for multi-disciplinary research related to SDGs at the global, national and local scale”. It serves to facilitate sharing of SDGs-related research findings from both the university and its partners. It also facilitates capacity building to enhance the analytical capacity of academic community and policy makers from national and local level to conduct SDGs related analysis.” UNPAD has also recently made an update into its curriculum for first-year students integrating SDGs into its teaching programs.

Following the MoU signing ceremony, a panel discussion was held, entitled “Strategic partnership towards accelerated SDGs attainment: The role of academia”. The speakers in this panel discussion included Christophe Bahuet (Country Director UNDP Indonesia), Prof. Arief Anshory Yusuf (Executive Director SDGs Center UNPAD), Ir. Erna Witoelar, Msi (Co-chair filantropi Indonesia), Ir. Wahyuningsih Darajati, MSc. (Director of Forestry and Marine Conservation BAPPENAS) dan Ir. Taufik Hidayat, MM,.MEP. (Head of BAPPEDA Lampung Province).

The discussion concluded that Inclusivity is the key to achieve the SDGs.”Partnering with the academe is a first and fundamental step to accelerate the implementation of SDGs, both in the national and sub-national level”, said Mr. Bahuet. Meanwhile, In his closing remark, Prof. Arief Anshory Yusuf said that SDGs is also a great opportunity for academe particularly universities to improve their relevance in the society and accelerate their own on-going reforms.
